Views about sensory modulation from people with schizophrenia and treating staff: A multisite qualitative study

Introduction Current non-pharmacological treatment options for people with schizophrenia are limited. There is, however, emerging evidence that sensory modulation can be beneficial this population. This study aimed to gain insight into from the user’s and treating staff’s perspectives. Method A qualitative content analysis design was used. Transcripts occupational therapists ( n=11) patients n=13) derived in-depth semi-structured interviews were analysed themes using analysis. Results Five emerged study: Service user education on approach is key; variety of tools should tried; Sensory provides a valued option; challenges managing perceived risk at an organisational level; shortage accessible effective training. Conclusion People staff had congruent perceptions regarding use as option. The findings suggest addition schizophrenia. We further research intervention effectiveness quantitative methods so these results explored.
